O'Brien steps down as Wexford football manager

The Westmeath native has been in charge less than two years.

AIDAN O’BRIEN has stepped down as Wexford senior football manager the county board announced this evening.

In a statement issued on their official website, Wexford say the Westmeath native took the decision after less than two years in charge for “personal reasons”.

O’Brien, who took over from current Kildare boss Jason Ryan in October 2012, was appointed on the back of underage and college success, most notably with the Wexford U21s who he took to a Leinster final in 2008.

He also managed Good Counsel College to an All-Ireland College title in 1999.

During his time in charge of the senior side, Wexford reached two Leinster semi-finals losing to Meath and Dublin in 2013 and 2014 respectively before crashing out in the first round of the qualifiers to Laois on both occasions.

They were relegated from Division 2 of the National Football League in 2013 and failed to gain promotion this year.

The Wexford statement in full reads:

“Aidan O Brien has confirmed to the County Chairman that for personal reasons he will not be continuing as Senior Football Team Manger.
“He did tremendous work during his two years at the helm and on behalf of Coiste Chondae
“[We] would like to thank him most sincerely for all his efforts.”The football monitoring committee will now start the process of finding a successor.”
